Havenbrook

Red-brick herringbone lanes, trimmed lawns, a bakery that opens at four in the morning and a grandmother on every stoop. Havenbrook is the most beautiful city in the Nation, and the one where a wrong word at dinner can cost you everything.

History

Havenbrook sits at the crossroads of the Nation, where every highway meets, and it has always behaved like it knows it. The old quarter was settled by immigrant families who arrived with nothing, built bakeries and social clubs and churches, and quietly became the most powerful people in the Nation without anyone outside the neighborhood noticing.

The Families are exactly that: a handful of old bloodlines bound by marriage, godparenthood and debt. They were the first to sign the Concord, and Don Carmine Abruzzi still keeps the pen he signed it with in a glass case in his study. To the Families, the Concord wasn't a truce. It was a promotion. And with the Chairman gone, they believe the seat at the head of the table should pass to the people who were there first.

Not every family made it through the Clearance. When Ace Holdings fell, some of the oldest names in Havenbrook were exposed as fronts and lost everything. Their estates went under the hammer at the Auction House: vintage Tommy Guns from the gold war, armored overcoats tailored for men who expected to be shot at, boxes of Havanas that had been aging in a cellar since before the Concord.

Every lot sold at auction is a reminder: in Havenbrook, you can lose a hundred years of family history in one bad week.

Neighborhoods and landmarks

Havenbrook Auction House

Rare pieces from old family estates, sold nowhere else in the Nation. Auctioneer Mr. Penhallow sells the Vintage Tommy Gun, one of the hardest-hitting weapons in the game; the Armored Overcoat, heavy protection with old-world style; and the Box of Havanas, which restores a big chunk of energy. He never asks where an heirloom came from. He never forgets who bought it.

Little Italy

Restaurants with checkered tablecloths, delis with salami hanging in the window and back rooms where the real meetings happen. Food businesses here earn more than anywhere else in the Nation.

Brownstone Row

Old-family rowhouses on leafy streets. The stoop sees everything. Brownstones can only be built in Havenbrook, and homes of every kind earn extra rent.

Cathedral Hill

The old church, the social clubs and Don Abruzzi's house, which has the best view in the city and the worst parking.

Downtown

Havenbrook PD Headquarters, Havenbrook City Hall, St. Mercy, the Savings & Trust, the Golden Ace and the rest, set around a red-brick square. Past the edge of town, the lots give way to deep woods and stone walls.

Who runs it

Don Carmine Abruzzi is eighty-one, nearly blind and still the sharpest mind in Havenbrook. He runs the Families from a kitchen table, over coffee, with his grandchildren doing their homework in the next room. He has outlived every rival he ever had, and he plans to outlive the Clearance too.

The Families' rule is simple: respect the neighborhood. Pay your taxes, keep your business quiet and never, ever bring trouble to a family dinner.

Faces of Havenbrook

Life on each side

Criminals

The Auction House is the reason to come. The Tommy Gun is one of the strongest weapons in the Nation. Pair it with a criminal's attack bonus and you become the most feared name in your city. Save up, travel in, buy, and travel out.

Police

The Armored Overcoat stacks beautifully with an officer's already-high defense. Havenbrook also sits in the middle of the map, so it's the best base for patrolling the other four.

Civilians

Havenbrook is built for the patient landlord. Restaurants, delis and bakeries get a big food bonus, and homes earn more rent. The land is pricier than average, but a civilian's property discount and income bonus make it pay.

Specialty buildings and perks

  • Old money: restaurants, delis and bakeries +25%, houses and brownstones +20%, apartments +15%.
  • Only in Havenbrook: the Brownstone and the Bakery. Banks, hotels and the Stadium can also go up here.
  • Pricey land: lots cost 20% more than standard.
  • A starting city: open from day one, and newcomers here pay nothing to bullies far above their level.
  • Havenbrook Auction House: rare weapons, armor and cigars sold nowhere else.
Worked example: the food bonus
Deli: $12,000, $29.50/hr × 1.25
$885/day
Deli payback, versus 17 days elsewhere
14 days
Bakery (Havenbrook only): $20,000, $50/hr × 1.25
$1,500/day
Bakery payback
13 days

A civilian Deli here pays back in about 10 days. No street-vendor permit needed, and it upgrades all the way to level 10.

Tips for Havenbrook

  • Start with a House and a Taco Stand. Houses earn +20% here, so your day-one House pays back in about 14 days. Then make a deli your next rung: delis get the food bonus here and need no street-vendor permit.
  • Brownstones are a Havenbrook exclusive with a home bonus on top. Great mid-game rent.
  • Bring cash when you visit the Auction House, then deposit what's left at the bank before you leave. Shoppers carrying money are easy marks.
  • Havenbrook sits in the middle of the map: every other city is $48 to $54 by bus. Use it as your hub.
  • Keep a Box of Havanas in your inventory for the days you need a big energy boost.
